Marvel Studios Announcement – Stuff You May Have Missed

b34cfaf84e0370fc146cb2f170d9b84cMarvel Studios went above and beyond with yesterday’s announcements for Phase 3 of their Marvel Cinematic Universe, but afterwards, studio president Kevin Feige took part in a Q&A session with press, giving hints and insight into what’s to come. BCP wasn’t present, but the event was well documented, so we decided to break it down here for you lovely people.

On ‘Iron Man 4’: Feige was vague, simply saying “Are there more years after 2020? It’s possible.”

On Benedict Cumberbatch’s reported casting as Doctor Strange: “If it were confirmed, we would have said so today…It could be announced later today, next week … it will be out sometime before the movie hits theaters?”.

On the possibility of Spider-Man appearing in Marvel Studios movies: Recent reports have suggested Marvel and Sony are negotiating to share movie rights for Spider-Man, but Fiege was pretty tight-lipped, stating that anything not addressed at this event was purely rumour and speculation.

On The Serpent Society: Originally, Feige announced Cap 3’s title as The Serpent Society, which is the name of a snake-themed group of villains in the comics. After the Avengers: Infinity War teaser was shown, they revealed the actual title as Captain America: Civil War. When asked about a movie featuring the Serpent Society, Feige admitted “there are always plans, but mainly jokes.”

On Captain America: Civil war: Feige was questioned on how Civil War will work in the MCU. The comic storyline was heavily focussed on superheroes having to reveal their secret identities (which no-one in the MCU really has), and a key role in the story was Spider-Man (who Marvel don’t have the film rights to). Fiege gave a clear answer to this:

I don’t want to give too much away, but needless to say, the generalities of the act are the same. Something happens, perhaps it’s cumulative for things that have happened though all of the movies leading up to this point. It has made the governments of the world say “we need to have some oversight of these guys. They need to report to somebody. So it becomes more… it falls under that umbrella, rather than “you have to take off your mask.” It’s not about the secret identity thing, as much as it is about, overall, who reports to who, and who can agree to oversight committee. Because as of now, in Avengers 2, there is no more security council, there is no S.H.I.E.L.D., obviously. Stark is paying for it, Captain America is running it, and things occur that will make governments begin to question.

He also revealed that Black panther will be a big part of Civil War, so we’ll see a lot of him in costume before his solo movie.

On a Hulk or a Black Widow solo movie: According to Feige, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson are signed on to appear as The Hulk and Black Widow in a number of the slated movies, but as far as solo movies go, he said it’s about bringing new characters to the screen, and gave the standard response: “We’ll see. We’d love to do it.”

On how The Inhumans fit into the MCU: Feige hinted that we may find out about Inhumans sooner than we expect. With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. heavily hinting at an Inhumans-based storyline on TV, BCP suggests that’s where you should be looking, but Feige did say we may see easter eggs in the MCU.

On the MCU on TV: Jeph Loeb handles the TV side of things, so it’s not really Fiege’s toy box. When asked if the upcoming Netflix series’ featuring The Defenders will tie in, Fiege said it’s not likely, but they do exist in the same universe, so anything is possible.

Feige was also asked questions on whether telekinetic dog Cosmo would appear in the Guardians Of The Galaxy sequel, and whether Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel would appear on film before her solo movie is released, but he was unable to give any definite answers.

And there you have it. Yesterday was a big, big day for Marvel Studios, who are moving from strength to strength. The next 4 years are going to be a hell of a ride.
