Godzillafw936325An interesting piece picked up by THR, who said that Toho will begin production on a new Godzilla movie, which will run parallel to Legendary/Warner Brothers own Godzilla series.

The piece quoted a staff member at Toho as saying;

This is very good timing after the success of the American version this year: if not now, then when? The licensing contract we have with Legendary places no restrictions on us making domestic versions.

It has been some time since the Japanese studio – who have produced the series and its various spin offs – put a Godzilla film into production as the last film “Godzilla: Final Wars” [See video below] was released in 2004, that movie benefited from featuring many other Toho owned Kaiju like Mothra, Rodan or Zilla (that horrible US Roland Emmerich one) unlike Legendary/Warner’s recent 2014 version which had to use new creatures (the MUTO’s) due to only licensing the Godzilla character. However it is thought that it is likely that more of the other Kaiju will feature in its sequel after Legendary announced at this years San Diego Comic Con that they had acquired the rights to use characters such as Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah.

As a fan of anything that features two guys in rubber monster suits fight whilst pyrotechnics go off around them, I definitely like the idea of having two different series to choose from. Sure the recent one had great effects but felt a little hollow and met with a mixed fan reaction (currently holding a 68 percent fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes).
