techjacket-07-31243Publisher: Image Comics
Writer: Joe Keatinge
Artist: Khary Randolph, Emilio Lopez
Release Date: 7th January 2014

Every issue in Tech Jacket’s initial arc opened with a flashback, each of which helped deepen the reader’s connection to this deftly crafted world and its cornucopia of weird and wonderful characters. This time, however, we flash forward 30,000 years to witness the destruction of Alpha Centauri; a world ruled by what can only be described as ‘celestial sea-horse dudes’, who can only look on in horror as their world is engulfed by a ravaging insectoid swarm.

Sounds wild, right? Well, it looks even better, thanks to another masterclass in creature design and backgrounds by Khary Randolph. It would appear that whatever outlandish concept writer Joe Keatinge can dream up, Khary can deliver to the page. Seriously, I’m beginning to run out of superlatives to describe this guy’s work, and with colourist Emilio Lopez adding even more depth and vitality to proceedings, every page simply crackles with an infectious, pulsating energy.

As for the ongoing plot, the explosive opening has given us a glimpse of a probable outcome, although there is an implication that alternate dimensions (and potentially time travel), may play a part. As the issue progresses we also learn that Lin’s arrival on earth had a dual purpose; to warn Zack and his family, and to act as a beacon for Commander XI’s Geldarian Cruiser! It’s another intriguing and cleverly crafted opening, which raises plenty of interesting questions whilst continuing to subtly develop the central characters. Once again, I’m on tenterhooks waiting for the next issue, especially given the total WTF moment contained in that final panel.

If you’re not on the Tech jacket bandwagon yet, why the hell not!? Seriously, you’re missing out on one hell of a comicbook.

Rating: 5/5.
