The journey continues for the crew of the NSEA Protector, as writer Erik Burnham answers the question I’m sure many fans of ‘Galaxy Quest’ were asking at the film’s climax. As it turns out, the activation of the Omega 13 device didn’t just have repercussions for the ship’s crew. At that very same moment, a group of Drythan rebels were about to deal a crushing blow to the Technocratic rulers of their society, but the device’s activation turned a sure victory into a devastating defeat. Now the Rebels want revenge on those who changed the course of their destiny.

The series premise is efficiently setup almost in its entirety within the first few pages, although there are sure to be various twist and turns along the way, as evidenced by the slightly ‘meta’ closing panels. At this stage, the Drythan rebels are positioned as the villains of the piece, but there is an underlying sense that this might not be as straightforward as it appears. Commander Peter Quincy Taggart (Jason Nesmith) and ‘Questerian’ Brandon are the main focus of the issue, but we are briefly reintroduced to the rest of the main crew, each captured in stylised, but easily recognisable forms by artist Nacho Arranz, whose work is pretty easy on the eye.

The only minor criticism I have of this opening issue, is that the pacing slows significantly in the middle section, and the writing is perhaps not quite as tight as some of Burnham’s other work. There is no doubt, however, that he has a special talent for transposing film characters authentically to the page, whilst creating engaging, humorous, and action packed stories, so I really can’t think of another writer I’d prefer to be at the helm of this series. He’s begun the expansion of the Galaxy Quest universe beyond the movie in fine form, and it’s all done with the same clear affection for the source material he’s shown in his work on Ghostbusters and TMNT.

By Grabthar’s Hammer…what a start!

Rating: 4/5.
