Upon picking up my weekly quota of review material – Dynamite’s ” KING Flash Gordon ” and “KING Phantom ” – I instantly realised that I wasn’t particularly aware of either of the titles. To to my surprise however, rather than spinning off from Dynamite’s previous crossover series ‘Kings Watch’, the KING part actually refers to a brand new imprint which happens to take place after Kings Watch but expands as a line.

It would seem that the term King is now a Dynamite imprint that focuses around the characters from King Features (celebrating their 100th anniversary) who Dynamite also print. However, that shouldn’t be taken as a sign that the content will be ‘of that time’, as instead I found myself reading a very contemporary piece more in line with current space operas like Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy.

The basic characters are all in there, something which should satiate any Gordon fans, but the change of settings and dialogue make Flash, Zarkov et al seem all the more interesting. No doubt this was also the intention of pulling in such a well-regarded duo of writers.

The story is also serviced fairly well in terms of Ferguson’s interiors, which are pleasant enough but could perhaps make a bit more from the sci-fi palette he has been given – at least in my opinion.

This series has potential, but lets see how the rest of the King Dynamite imprint fairs? serviced fairly well in terms of Ferguson’s interiors, which are pleasant enough but could perhaps make a bit more from the sci-fi palette he has been given, at least in my opinion.

This series definitely has potential, but let’s see how the rest of Dynamite’s King imprint fares before making any bold predictions.

Rating: 3/5.
