A look At Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles S01E01 “Twisted”

It’s fitting the first episode of Bruce Timm’s Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles centers around Batman and Harley Quinn. In it, we’re (re)introduced to a darker version of Batman and a more deranged and homicidal version of Harley Quinn.

Batman dispenses justice like Bat-Dad from Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox. Whereas this iteration of Harley would be frightening sight to see if paired up with the Joker from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
The animation is a breath of fresh air considering the more recent films tend towards an anime like aesthetic. The setting and backgrounds are comparable to Batman: The Animated Series whereas the characters have a bit more of a Batman Beyond flare to them.

That said, it’s a bit shocking to see the level of violence and horror-movie-like quality clash with these “familiar” characters. This is definitely not one for the kids, but this is the direct result of “cartoons” growing up with their audience. The five minute episode doesn’t shy from the grotesque, so it’ll be interesting to see how far this new series pushes the envelope.

Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles has two more episodes scheduled for June 10 and 12, which will focus on Superman and Wonder Woman. The min-series has been renewed for a second season, consisting of 10 episodes. And the full length animated film, Justice League: Gods and Monsters comes to Blu-Ray and DVD July 28, 2015. DC Comics also has tie-in comics scheduled for each of the flagship characters Batman (July 22), Superman (July 29), and Wonder Woman (August 5) leading up to the new comic title Justice League: Gods and Monsters (August 12).
