I’m a massive fan of the Rivers of London series of novels, so when I saw that this comic was coming out I decided that it was time for me to dust off my old review hat and dive right back in.

Like I said, I’m a big fan of the books so to me this served as a perfect companion piece.  However, I do feel that if you haven’t read the books previously, you’ll end up missing pretty much all of the references. So while it’s not exactly essential that you have a prior experience of Ben Aaronovitch’s novels beforehand, it’s definitely going to work against you somewhat if you haven’t.

For those of you experiencing this world for the first time, I’ll do my best to run it down; Peter Grant is a police officer who is part of a special branch that deal with Magic. He and his superior officer (the last true wizard of England) jump in and deal with anyone caught playing with magic. So when a car shows up in the Thames with traces of magic and a dead driver, Grant instantly steps in to solve the puzzle.

Two things I love are magic, and a good mystery, so for me this is pretty much perfect.  Essential reading for fans of the novels, then, and If you haven’t read the books beforehand, then I really really really really recommend them. Really!

Rating: Good wee book, 3.5 out of 5
