The second instalment of this series opens with Dr Moroder and his gang of mutant, sentient animals. For the literary among you, parallels with The Island of Dr Moreau are obvious and the good doctor’s name a definite nod. The manimals, recently granted the power of speech, are outgrowing their creator. Has the spore created these creatures?
Meanwhile Onyx and the IDCJ and trying to leave the strange jungle. Onyx takes off, leaving the troop behind, to fight the creatures. We get some great scenes reminiscent of Jackson’s King Kong. Only with a shiny cyborg. Onyx is captured and the IDCJ come to her rescue just as another explosion occurs.
The spores that have been landing all over the world are creating new life forms and Onyx as much as the humans of the IDCJ are struggling to get to grips with the changes. Abigail, the psychic in the IDCJ, becomes more integral as she channels a growing power.
At one point, Abigail admits “I am so out of my element here” and to be honest, I’ve got to agree. This space-age splicing of The Island of Dr Moreau is so detailed and so complex, with overlapping intertextuality and referencing, that I felt as lost as the IDCJ. What is here is enough to tell me that fans of this genre will absolutely adore Onyx – it is solid, beautiful, ghastly and with quality story-telling but I am just out of my element.
