Issue two has sort of thrown me for a loop. Part one was so brain-chomping(ly) awesome with all the famous cameos (from Andy Warhol to Charles Manson), that it’s a bit of a fall back down to earth to be taken into a character backstory – specifically the tale of Mrs Kuen, but once you get over the initial come down this story is still a highly enjoyable read – although I will confess to googling ‘Pitt Island’, ‘NYC Cannibals,’ and every other name mentioned in this issue until I was satisfied there were no actual historic figures featured.
Fans of the 68 series will instantly recognise Pitt Island from 68: Rule of War though, and it’s infamous inhabitants –the Bowers- who are loosely based on the Zodiac Killer (so there is a tenuous historic connection there). The issue is a narration of events by Mrs Kuen to Alice about how she and Shelly came to be in New York, what happened on Pitt Island, and how they managed to escape…
The story itself is a good read, but it’s when I started to do a little bit of research that I found all the links in this story to past episodes in the 68’ series which I’ve not yet fully read. I think that, if you are familiar with all 5 previous chapters in the ’68 saga, you would find this a lot more enjoyable as you already have a level of immersion in that world.
As with previous issues the art is pretty spot-on. The very busy and slightly messy frames emphasise the chaotic world of the ’68 series, and the zombie kills (in fact all the kills) are pretty much money shots. Mrs Kuen conducting the cranium split on a zombie to save her husband is my personal pick of the day here!
Not quite as impressive as it’s opening Issue, part two of 68 Last Rites continues to build on the stories of the Flatiron residents, and the fight-back against the zombie apocalypse. Issue two closes with us about to find out the contents of the film recovered from the Government envoy in Issue one, and, with that, the promise of answers to why the zombie outbreak began!
