When it came time to select review material for this week, I decided to challenge myself by picking up a comic for which I had a preconceived idea it would suck. This stems from the very idea of a pet-turned-meme-turned-recent cultural icon, an idea which makes me no longer wish to be on this planet. However, I tried to shake that bias off to be fair to the folks behind the title, and I didn’t viscerally hate it as much as I thought I would.
To be honest, this simply isn’t meant for me or readers of a certain taste, having more of a funny pages type set up that would make it suitable for much younger crowds.
The book has a few self-contained stories with a basic premise of the sardonic Grumpy paired with it’s brother Pokey (also a cat). The stories feature the pair getting into a series of misadventures and have a somewhat Garfield like feel to them, only the claws are not so sharp.
If you were expecting a Moore like examination of metaphysics, then you were always going to be disappointed, but if you are looking to grab something for the kids then Grumpy Cat will fit that role.
