So as you might reasonably assume from the title, this week in Geeking Out I’m looking at various playmats that are available as surfaces for playing games on. Stick around until the end cos there’s a massive competition to take part in too!
Particularly since the arrival of Fantasy Flight’s X-Wing Miniatures Game there has been a rapid expansion in the availability and range of these kind of mats, with some enterprising folk even taking to printing their own on posters, card or even banners. But on balance, with the professional version being both cost effective and high quality, that’s probably your best bet.
Gamemat.eu are a relative newcomer to the scene, but produce a range of really exciting, diverse game mats on what are essentially giant mousemats. This year they sponsored Adepticon in the US and many of their mats were in use for games as different as 40k and Malifaux. With mats priced at around £30 for a 3’x3′, £40 for 4’x4′, £60 for 6’x4′ (and includes a carry bag) they’re well priced and highly detailed.
For Adepticon, many different worlds cams to life thanks to the regular mats:

As well as a range of different regular battlefields, the new Quarantine mat works well for any game from the present forwards, be it Batman, Walking Dead, Deadzone, Infinity, Dust Tactics, and of course 40k.

The classic space mats lend themselves well to X-Wing scenarios or general play (as a side note, they also gets stolen by the kids for Micro Machines), withstanding both big and little kids going pew pew pew tiny spess-sheeps! I can also see myself playing Marvel Miniature Game on it, with the Guardians of the Galaxy facing off against Thanos eventually…

I should mention that Gamemat.eu also manufacture pre-painted ruins and a folding gaming table. They even do a sideline in baby mats!

I have to say, I’m very taken with these. They look great and are tough enough to resist two very eager boys, a baby and a curious cat.
All in all, highly recommended!
Now, onto the Geeking Out “Big Church of Geek” contest.
We have a massive prize courtesy of the fine folks at Plastcraftgames.com which I’ll be reviewing in the NEXT Geeking Out – a full colour 28mm church kit that’s about a foot square!
