So, Limbo reaches its climax… and it reaches it first with a wallop, and then with a thoughtful reflection.

In the last issue we followed Sandy, the vodun priestess all the way to the point where she was possessed by Baron Samedi, the Lord of the Dead. With this issue, we’re back to find out the fate of the detective, Clay.

Oh, and Ms Bridgette is revealed as being Maman Brigitte, the good Baron’s wife. If you’ve been following the series, then that should come as no surprise.

This is very thoughtful end to Clay’s story as all of Baron Samedi’s and Maman Brigitte’s machinations and manipulations come to a head, with the outcome of their bet on Clay’s fate being finally decided. Will Clay redeem himself in the layer of reality that is Dedande or will he revert to type and remain the man he was before his “accident”? Who is the ultimate manipulator? You might get a surprise.   C’mon, you know you’ll have to read the comic to find out.   I promise you it’s worth it.

Dan Watters continues to impress. You have to love a writer who references the film “Johnny Got His Gun”, (or, if you prefer, the Metallica video for One). More importantly, I am very impressed with how he manages to make all the bat shit craziness that came in the first five issues coalesce into a coherent and poignant finale. I doff my hat to him for that.

Casper Wijngaard continues to use a palette right out of the eighties to compliment his excellent art. The way that he depicts Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte is truly magnificent. In fact, his Maman Brigitte is worthy of being brought to life in a fine art sculpture or, if anyone out there loves cosplay, then this would be an AWESOME costume.

All in all, this is a fitting end to a magnificent roller-coaster ride. If you don’t come off slightly wobbly by the end of it all, then you’re simply far too jaded to even be on this plane of existence.

Rating: 5/5.
