In the latest issue of IDW Publishing’s Ghostbusters International, the team are gearing up to go and save Egon from whatever hell (literally) he has found himself. In order to save him they need to obtain the Key and the Map to find the book of spells Loftur wants (yes that’s the big bad’s name who wants to control the devil with a book – as you do).

The previous issue saw the team bring in the Real Ghostbuster version of Egon, what with the IDW Egon being kidnapped and all. This was am absolutely genius move by the creative team to raise the peril without handicapping the story by taking the brains out of the group. It also helps that the RGB Egon sounds exactly like he does in the cartoon, making his inclusion feel natural given the long-running continuity.

Erik, Dan and Luis once again have managed to ramp up the crazy factor but somehow make it all seem so plausible and natural through their loving long-form lore and world building. This is the comic book medium at its absolute best.

The guest artwork by Evensen is really well done too, giving the readers a striking visual indication that we have changed storyline while still maintaining the flow of the book. Giving the two halves of the story different art styles makes the issue so much easier to read and for a new reader to pick up, especially if they aren’t used to so many grey jumpsuits. As with the other guest artists in the past, their styles are used as something of a pallet cleanser for Dan’s distinctive work, as well as presumably to take the pressure off him a little. Evensen’s art most certainly impressive, adding an undefinable quality to his section of the story that helps show just how much the characters feel out of their depth and are worried for the future. I would be more than happy to see his work appear again in a later issue.

In summary, this is yet another great issue that should already be on your pull list like the rest of the series.

Just buy it already!

Rating: 5/5.
