Oni Press announces new “Pocket Like You Stole It” Rick & Morty miniseries

Oni Press have just announced details of their latest Rick and Morty spin-off series, RICK AND MORTY: POCKET LIKE YOU STOLE IT, set to go on sale in July 2017.

Inspired by the Rick and Morty mobile game, Pocket Mortys, this new mini-series, written by Tini Howard (The Skeptics, Power Rangers: Pink), illustrated by Marc Ellerby (backup comic artist, Rick and Morty), and colored by Katy Farina (Steven Universe, Rick and Morty) turns the addictive world of catching “pocket Mortys” into a brutal bloodsport.

The five-part series sees Morty on a quest to free himself (and all the other Mortys) from the clutches of Ricks, who collect Mortys and force them to battle one another for schmeckles and glory. Along the way he’ll discover the grisly history of Morty battling, the dastardly lengths that Ricks are willing to stoop to in order to win, and perhaps… the strength in himself that’s needed to free the Mortys once and for all.?

Speaking in an interview about the series on EW.com, Howard said: “I really love Rick and Morty. Before I even got to work on anything related to the series, I remember watching it with my husband and going, “Oh my god this show is so smart! I wish I was smart enough to write that kind of humor.” And he was like, “I think you are.” So I had a moment of courage where I was talking to Ari our editor one day and said I’d really want to try doing a Rick & Morty thing. Is there anything available? And I got to try this.”

She added, “It’s a sense of humor that really resonates with me anyway. My own sense of humor vacillates between goofy and bleak. I’m also a huge lifelong sci-fi geek, so I love how they look at sci-fi stuff and turn it on its head. In this series, instead of looking at Pokemon as this heroic thing, let’s cut to the bleak truth of what this sci-fi thing actually means, which is very Rick and Morty. “

Readers who can’t wait until July can get an exclusive first look at Rick and Morty: Pocket Like You Stole It #1 when it features inOni Press’s Rick and Morty FCBD 2017 Edition on Free Comic Book Day, May 6, 2017, at participating retailers.

Rick and Morty: Pocket Like You Stole It #1 will be available at comic book shops and on ComiXology on July 5, 2017.
