London-based publisher SelfMadeHero have acquired the UK and Commonwealth rights to Spinning, the first full-length autobiographical work from Austin-based cartoonist and illustrator Tillie Walden.
Walden, who was included on The Guardian’s list of the “top 20 talents set to take 2017 by storm”, has previously released The End of Summer, A City Inside and I Love This Part through Avery Hill Publishing, the latter of which I was lucky enough to review a couple of years ago, calling it “nothing short of heartbreaking”, and adding that “Walden does a truly fantastic job of conveying these crippling, multi-layered emotions in such a deceptively straightforward way.”
In Spinning, she tells the story of her childhood, which was spent in the twisted, insular world of competitive figure skating. With the rink as its backdrop, this hotly anticipated graphic memoir captures what it’s like to come of age, come out and come to terms with leaving behind everything you used to know.
Spinning will be published simultaneously in the UK by SelfMadeHero and in the US by First Second (an imprint of Roaring Brook Press) in September 2017
