Okay, so this is going to be a fairly short review, purely because I got so much pleasure out of the good ol’ fashioned “going in blind” approach to issue 18 that I don’t want to spoil anything and prevent anyone else from doing the same.

Do you ever get to the end of a comic and say to the person next to you “what the hell did I just read?! I loved that!” Well, this was one of those issues for me. I got to the end, then immediately went back to the start and just absorbed it all over again. There’s something about Tomasi and Gleason’s approach to this Superman series that ticks all the boxes for me and leaves me with such a massive a smile on my face. That’s Superman for me. Even when it’s such an impactful issue, I can still have a smirk at the end.

Style wise, Gleason has a truly distinctive tone to his work which is delivered in bucketloads here. Mick Gray’s inks over the top just lend that extra bit of oompf and provide a kinetic feel to the pages.

Honestly though, I really can’t say much about what happens in the issue without spoiling things, but I think this is going to be one of those issues that people are going to be talking about for a long, long time. I know I will be.

The only negative thing I can think of us that I’m now going to have to read Action Comics now as well if I want the whole story. Not always a fan of that, but in this case, I’m happy to make an exception.

All in all, this is easily the most excited I’ve been about a DC book in a good long while. I think you will be too.

Rating: 4.5/5.

  1. Really enjoyed this issue as well as this arc in general. Can’t wait to see what’ll happen. AC and Superman have been some of the best current running series from DC.

  2. I’m a newcomer to the Rebirth Superman series, only started reading with Multiplicity, and I have to say I really enjoyed Superman #18 as well. Its been ages since I’ve enjoyed Superman comics as much as this, brilliant series, and I loved the story in this issue as well :)

    1. It’s the consistency that has impressed us the most, I think. Tough to maintain that standard with the fortnightly shipping schedule.

      1. Same here, great they manage to keep the quality of the book so good, that fortnightly shipping schedule must be tough to keep going sometimes.
