Group Chat Review – Mister Miracle #5 (DC Comics)
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Mitch Gerads
Release Date: 13th December 2017
Here at BCP, we love to talk comics. Sam got all excited about Mister Miracle, and new reviewer Adam wanted something recommended. So, they had a chat – and here it is. It’s like YouTube, without all that distracting video and weirdos with beards and glasses.
SAM
What DC book should I review?
ADAM
Mister Miracle?
I mean to get on that
I’ve not read much New Gods
SAM
Mister Miracle is fab. Very odd. Profound.
ADAM
Assume it’s the same character but last thing I read was an issue about 15 years ago. He’s an escape artist?
SAM
Yup. No Spoilers. But from outset, amazing.
ADAM
Ok I’ll check it out
…
What did I just read?
SAM
Also, how good is it, in a beyond crazy kinda way?!
ADAM
It must be tough to draw Barda
Like keeping everything scaled
SAM
Oh I love how they do her! I really dislike the new gods but I’m all over this.
ADAM
Only read the first few last night
Very good but weird
SAM
Yeah. Quite.
ADAM
I think the art is what keeps it going
If it was poorer art I think it wouldn’t keep the interest in the same way
From the first issue I mean
SAM
Have you had Orion having his massive rant / lawsuit in their living room?
It’s profoundly weird.
ADAM
Not yet
The first issue as a stand-alone with no further info does feel like he is dead and trying to escape
SAM
The art is a major selling point. But it’s just wonderful to see something utterly different within the quasi mainstream.
ADAM
It’s a bit Silent Hill esque
SAM
Very
ADAM
Have you seen the face of God?
Finished up to current last night
Definitely interesting
So so good isn’t it?
I’m not sure about the need for Big Barda sex face for a whole page though…
SAM
That is true. But it’s trying to do something different, and it’s making her much more of a 3D character
ADAM
It’s not gratuitous and yes I can see many reasons to expand her as a believable character who is more than a sidekick to Miracle Man
SAM
Much more so. It’s the best issue since the first
ADAM
I don’t see Miracle Man being read by fnarnfy pubescent sweaty young men for the bewbs so it’s all good
SAM
And the thing is that it isn’t. Fnarfy
ADAM
Exactly
It’s well within context and I don’t have a problem with it. I’m not a prude
I’m not sure I click with the character quite right though. He has these moments of pathos and then bang he does something weird. It actually captures the essence of a young ‘god’ tortured pretty much from birth.
SAM
4/5, I reckon
ADAM
It’s like you begin to almost empathise and then Boom
SAM
Yeah. It doesn’t flinch in the writing
ADAM
See I was debating the 4, 4.5, 5
SAM
I think for something to truly be a 5. It has to be something you’d instantly think of when someone asks you for something good you’ve read
And in some ways it is but it won’t be for everybody.
ADAM
Yeah so this isn’t a 5 for me because unless it’s in context or giving an example it’s not like a wow you are new to comics and need a good start for awesome?
Like the story behind Infinite Crisis to me is insanely good as I devoured that without having read any DC for about ten years previous to that
SAM
Equally, though, you can join this at issue 5. Which is unusual for a mini series
ADAM
Yeah very true
I have a different perspective as I have no real idea of the characters other than in passing from things like the vs card game lol
SAM
Ha. But was I right to recommend it to you?
ADAM
Ha yeah
It’s the kind of thing I wouldn’t have been disappointed with buying upon recommendation. And I’m tight fisted Fifer so that’s pretty high praise.
SAM
You said it ;) 4/5 then. Glad you approved!
Overall Rating: 4/5.
