Joaquin Phoenix Joker origin movie set to start shooting in September

The Joker origin movie is officially a go at Warner Bros — but not the Jared Leto version that had been heavily rumoured.

The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that Joaquin Phoenix has finalized his deal to star as the Clown Prince of Time, and that shooting is set to begin in September in New York.

Todd Phillips will direct the film, which has been described as an “exploration of a man discarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” The script is co-written by Phillips and Scott Silver.

Interestingly, the project seems to be adopting a different approach than WB’s previous DC movies, with a rumoured budget of around $55 million and a “darker and more experimental” tone.

No release date has been announced yet, although with shooting due to start in the next few months, it’s not unlikely that we could see a late 2019/early 2020 premiere.
