AQUAMAN Surpasses Wonder Woman and Dawn of Justice at the Box Office
According to the latest figures from Box Office Mojo, James Wan’s Aquaman is currently sitting at a little over $887.6 million worldwide, a total which pushes it ahead of fellow DC movies Wonder Woman ($821.8 million) and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice ($873.6 million).
This impressive total, of which a little over $649 million comes from the international box office, pushes it into third place in terms of all-time DC movies, with only The Dark Knight ($1.005 billion) and The Dark Knight Rises ($1.084 billion) having grossed more.
Unlike the majority of its recent predecessors, Aquaman has managed to avoid the pre-emptive critical negativity which helped to sink the likes of Justice League and Suicide Squad, and while the overall reception has still been fairly mixed, the upbeat tone and striking visual style has helped this “enjoyable popcorn romp” become a much-needed glimmer of hope for Warner Bros. much-maligned DC movie plans.
To put Aquaman’s impressive figures in perspective, it’s now sitting at 10th all time in terms of super hero movies, and looks set to pass Spider-Man 3 ($890.8 million) in short order. In fact, the prospect of it hitting the much-lauded $1 billion mark isn’t outwith the realm of possibility, which is something I don’t think anyone could have predicted when this movie was first announced.
So what do you think? Why has Aquaman done so well at the box office, and could this potentially be a massive turning point for DC’s big screen plans? Let us know in the comments.
