DC’s Black Label Horror Title ‘The Nice House on the Lake’ Returns for its Second Act This March

DC have just dropped the cover artwork for the eagerly anticipated issue seven of their critically acclaimed Black Label horror series ‘The Nice House on the Lake’ from James Tynion IV, Alvaro Martinez Bueno, Jordie Bellaire, and AndWorld Design.

The main cover for issue #7 comes from series artist Bueno, while the variant is provided by longtime Big Comic Page favourite Juan Ferreyra.

It’s no secret that I absolutely love this series, calling the first chapter “easily the best opening issue to a series that I’ve read for quite some time”, and adding that it “delivers a perfect execution of a high-concept bait and switch that takes something normal and turns it into something else entirely” in my review back in June 2021.  It also made an emphatic entry into my Top 5 Comics of 2021 list.

In the series, a group of ten acquaintances are invited by a mutual friend to attend a party in a luxury lakehouse in the middle of nowhere, only to discover that their friend Walter is not of this Earth.  Not only that, but the rest of the world has seemingly been destroyed by a brutal alien invasion and they alone have been chosen to live out their days in this open-plan “paradise”, never wanting for anything.

Speaking about the series, Tynion IV said “I’ve always thought of myself as a horror writer…I like taking the things that I’m afraid about and turning them into monsters for my characters to grapple with. In superhero comics, you can always turn away at the last minute, and boil that conflict down into people in fun costumes punching each other. The Nice House on the Lake is trying to hit at deeper nerve, and the goal is to reach that final last moment and sit with the horror rather than turning away.”

The Nice House on the Lake #7 hits comic shops and digital platforms on March 1st, alongside the volume one trade paperback which collects the first six issues of the series.  So if you haven’t jumped on board yet, March 1st is absolutely the best time to remedy that.
