Outland Entertainment have just announced details of their first foray into the world of Solo Journaling Role-Playing Games! Write Through the Fear: A Dark and Hungry Place is a unique gaming and storytelling experience developed by horror writer Cullen Bunn that will be coming to Kickstarter early next week.

Here’s the official blurb:

A notebook.

A pen.

A mysterious city. A strange shadow stalking behind you.

A Dark and Hungry Place is a solo journaling adventure that casts you as a lone explorer of creeping, impossible horror. Each story prompt drags you deeper into the nightmare—through abandoned locales, haunted memories, and the places between waking and dream.

You’ll record every discovery, every monstrous encounter, every choice… even the ones you regret. Your journal becomes your story, shaped by your decisions. Will it serve as a reminder for you of the challenges you overcame? Or a warning for whoever finds the bloodstained journal next?

Will your own words become the final record of your descent?

Part role-playing adventure, part writing exercise, all horror. A terrible mystery awaits. Pick up your pen. Gather your courage.

Let’s tell a terrifying story.

Alone but together.

For gamers, the game presents a unique solo role-playing experience that can be played over and over again, each time introducing new locations, new mysteries, new horrors, and new adversaries to face. For writers, the project offers hundreds of writing prompts to kick your creativity into high gear. You’re playing a game, yes. But you are also writing a story that is unique to you.

Speaking about the news, Bunn said “I’ve always loved writing prompts. There’s something magical about a single sentence—just a spark—that manages to kick open a dozen creaking doors in my imagination. And while I love sitting around a table and gaming with friends, I also enjoy diving into a solo adventure. That said, I could see using this game in a group environment and seeing all the different stories your friends come up with!”

The game, which will take the form of a 5.5 x 8.5, 42-page black and white ‘zine, includes hundreds of writing prompts, hundreds of locations in a mysterious town, and dozens of horrific adversaries to face. It can be played over and over again, each time yielding something new. All you need to play the game and unlock hours of creative, terrifying fun, are this zine, a journal, a pen, and a couple of six-sided dice.

The Solo Journaling Adventure will be available in hardcopy and digital formats, and Outland are offering a limited run of 100 hardcovers for those of you who like collector’s items.
