I HATE IT HERE *I’M POOR EDITION*
I’M BACK! Did you miss me? Of course you did, massive thanks to David though, who stepping in like a pro while I got stuck in a thunder storm in a field.
Recently I’ve had to cut back on my monthly comics budget as it was getting ever so slightly out of control and I came to a realization. For a long time now, I’ve been an advocate for “voting with your wallet”, it’s been the subject of at least 1 article in the last 2 months and I realized that i was breaking my rule. The majority of the books I was buying were from the big two and I was buying them because, well, I always buy Batman, Avengers, Spider-man etc, I always have but once i took a serious look at my monthly intake and really thought about it, i don’t actually NEED any of these books. It was a strange thought, but it was almost an epiphany that these books are always going to be there. Batman is always going to be in Gotham, being a moody bastard, The Avengers are always going to be there, doing *something* and Deadpool is always going to be funny as hell. But I don’t *need* these books straight away, I’m more than happy to wait on the trade, and not even necessarily get it straight away.
However, books such as Chew, Saga, Brother Lono, The Wake and B.P.R.D. are *new* it’s stories that, for the most part, have never been told before, I have no idea what’s going to happen with them and I need to know! No Character is safe, every twist is unexpected and they’re still an absolute thrill to read. So that’s my read pile now, books that I genuinely enjoy and need to know every month what’s going to happen next. I’m still going to be picking up Hawkguy and Young Avengers because I just couldn’t let them go, they’re too good, but the rest is gone.
It was a strange feeling, cutting the majority of my read pile, mostly out of necessity, but it was also a relief, the characters and stories are always going to be there, like a comfort blanket, and I’m sure they’ll be just as good then as they’ve always been.
Love and Bullets,
Chris
