Release Date: 27th November 2013

Mignola continues to weave his unique band of weird and wonderful characters into world history with Sledge-Hammer 44. It’s the end of the Second World War and the allies have lost an important piece of tech to the Nazis. They need the help of armour clad Captain Fields (or who the allies believe to be Captain Fields) who has been little more than an unresponsive husk since his last mission.

The plot is great and you’re hooked within the first couple of pages with the return of a pretty big villain. The art is dark and detailed and gritty with loud bursts of colour when it’s needed and the characters are as impressive as we’ve come to expect. There are some images in this comic that will linger with me no matter how many comics I read each month. The whole WW2 setting is brilliantly captured and feels very authentic thanks to some thorough research. The uniforms, fashion, hair styles and technology all look the part.

Mignola has been creating this lore for going on 20 years now and the wealth of quality ideas he has instilled into his own unique lore is unrivalled. This short three issue arc will add another chapter to the rich history of the series and everyone should read it. No exceptions.

Rating: 9/10.
