The latest instalment of IDW’s licenced property mash-up always looked like being the hardest to pull off.

Ghostbusters was a natural fit, while the Ninja Turtles weren’t a million miles away from the X-Files hybrids like the Flukeman, but giant alien robots that turn into cars?

Fortunately, it works perfectly.

The Lone Gunmen’s investigation into the future plague has brought them into contact with the Autobots, resulting in a team-up that never feels forced and is full of great moments.

Paul Crilley’s script nicely mixes the drama with laugh out loud moments, driving on the main plot while allowing for entertaining character moments, particularly between the new “ninja buddies forever” duo of Langley and Bumblebee.

Dheeraj Verma’s gorgeous art is coloured straight from pencils, rendering a shadowy effect that stood the huge Autobots from looking too incongruous, making a real difference to the atmosphere of what is essentially quite a serious storyline.

It’s another great issue in what is turning out to be a top class mini-series.
