Now this is promising.

Splitting the narrative between three time periods, The Last Broadcast is an intriguing mystery story set in the worlds of urban exploration and stage magic.

Ivan, an obnoxious young magician, wakes up in hospital after an explosion that killed his friends, before the tale flashes back to them exploring a secret bunker that belonged to Blackhall The Incredible, an infamous Magician from in the 1930s.

Another thread jumps back even further, with Ivan setting on the path to investigate Blackhall in the first place. There’s also a shadowy hooded killer in there somewhere too.

The Last Broadcast #1 is a textbook example of how to launch a new series. We don’t know what happened to the explorers, but we know it wasn’t good. The mystery of what actually happened to Blackhall and the killer following the trail both add to the puzzle and leave you gagging to know what’s going to happen next.

Gabriel Iumazark’s brilliantly atmospheric art comes over somewhere between the cartoony South American and Japanese styles and a darker, more European look. Either way, it’s perfect for Andre Sirangelo’s tight script.

Boom! have won a watch with this one and already I’m imagining how great a film The Last Broadcast would make.
