It will be rather difficult to turn on your television this fall without being inundated with some sort of comic book property. DC will have four shows on the air: Constantine, The Flash, Gotham, and Arrow. While Marvel has Agent Carter, Agents of SHIELD, and The Defenders Netflix mini-series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage). Even lesser known properties like Preacher and iZombie are getting adapted for AMC and The CW respectively.
Although Arrow ended its second season back in May, the casting department has wasted no getting the jump on season three by adding some big names to the series. First Devon Aoki (Sin City) was cast as Tatsu Yamashiro aka Katana. Karl Yune (Real Steel) is Maseo Yamashiro, Tatsu’s husband. His role is described as Oliver’s handler in Hong Kong, but will grow to become a friend and teacher. Both characters will help Oliver grow to become the superhero who now protects Starling City.
Then Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) returned the DC fold as Ray Palmer aka The Atom. Ray Palmer is described as an unrivaled scientist and inventor, who will play an unexpected role in Oliver’s and Felicity’s lives as the new Queen Consolidated owner and whose intentions with the company’s Applied Sciences division are a mystery.
Now Peter Stormare (Prison Break) has signed on as Werner Zytle also known as Vertigo. That’s right folks Count Vertigo is back! Zytle will be introduced in the season premiere as not only the first villain of the new season, but the new distributor of Starling City’s drug of choice Vertigo. Seth Gabel’s (Fringe) The Count was Arrow’s version of the character, but I’m told this Vertigo will be closer to DC’s New 52 incarnation.
It sounds like the third season of Arrow will be quite the production, and it can only get bigger from here in terms of star power and DC characters; although with Gotham on Fox I’m wondering how much of an affect this will have on Arrow. Since most of the villains have come from Batman’s rouges gallery.
Arrow kicks off its third season on October 8, 2014 at 8/7c on The CW
