This is the Warren Ellis book I’ve been waiting for.

Opening in something of a dreamscape, we meet our lead character in conversation over the universe and meet a man(?) with an interesting problem; he knows everyone that he was, but no idea who he is. This seems to set the tone for the rest of the book, which seems to speak more in metaphors and riddles than just plain text. Enough of the story is given away however, with an investigative journalist being given the job of a lifetime for a silly amount of money by a man she knows nothing about. Which doesn’t sound like much for a whole issue, but its more about what’s not being said that gives the book its charm

What definitely can be said is just how hauntingly beautiful this book is, with bold colours and harsh linework helping to draw the book towards being something truly amazing. Panels flow effortlessly from one to the next and from using a tablet with the brightness up full, colours that a most literally are blinding. She also does something strange, and I’m curious as to whether is was a writer prompt or not, but the way that a “birth defect” is portrayed was nothing short fantastic! For this uninitiated reviewer, Lotay is a new artist, but one I’ll be keeping a close eye on based on what I’ve seen here.

A detective story with a SciFi/dreamlike twist, I was sold almost from the very first page.

Rating: 5/5.
