Four issues in to a jump-on storyline, what do we look for? Snappy dialogue? Check. Action? Check. Genuine pathos? Check. Some resolution of storyline elements? Ish.
We’re getting to meat. As in a lot of dead meat. The story is really starting to kick into high gear, with a whole lot action in there (and a flashback, for good measure). The cover is really arresting, referencing earlier Hack/Slash storylines – but for all that, leaves you feeling a little flat as it suggests more involvement of a classic character (I say that as a newcomer to Hack/Slash – he just looks bad-ass).
The action sequences are highly effective, visceral and dynamic. The continued use of contrasting palettes works very well, and we’ve got a particularly striking single page spread that cuts right to the heart (on so many levels).
Again, where this does so will is giving the antagonist his own narrative – not a new trick, continues the slightly Slayer overtones, but highly effective. I could still do with more explanation of what’s going with the titular “Son of Samhain” himself in this, but I suppose I’m being picky.
Continues to be high on my want list, just over far too quickly!
Rating: 4/5.
