Review: Tokyo Ghost #10 (Image Comics)

This one has taken a few days to write. One of the most enjoyable series I have ever read, and it’s over after 10 issues. Safe to say it was more of a case of Fawlty Towers, and less of a Firefly though, with 10 issues of sheer perfection and originality.

What originally had me sold on the premise alone, it ended up making me think about society as a whole. With our constant dependence on social media and smart phones, and our inability to converse on a human level anymore, TG gave us a mirror to gaze into and see what we could become.

This isn’t going to be a review as such, how could it be, when you already know I’m going to give it 5/5 and send you on your way to buy it? This is my ode to Tokyo Ghost.

Rick Remender’s characterisation, that toes the line between the crazy personification of everything that is wrong about the internet in Davey Havok, to the “White Knight” in all of us that just wants to make the world a better place in Debbie, he created a world we could all relate to, but it’s been turned up to 11.

This was perfectly paired with the art powerhouse that is the team of Murphy and Hollingsworth. Perfectly complimenting each other’s work, they’ve created some of my favourite comic pages of all time, and more than a few pages in Tokyo Ghost that have been incredibly shocking! From the lush forest-scapes, to the demented imaginings of Davey’s mind, Sean Gordon Murphy has brought a level of flair an originality that, in my opinion, puts him up with some of the greatest in the industry. Tokyo Ghost (actually just about anything Matt Hollingsworth works on) is what i’m going to be showing people in the future when they ask what a good colourist looks like, because he truly excels here It takes a great talent to understand when to go all our neon and when to use more muted tones.

If there was one niggle, and it’s a tiny, teensy one, it’s that sometimes the message of the book came through a little pointed. maybe there’s people that need it shown to them in full technicolour brilliance though.

To Messirs Remender, Murphy and Hollingsworth, these past 10 issues have been a absolute joy, and I hope it’s sooner rather than later that we see the like of this again.
