It’s not for everyone, but The Goon’s brand of gonzo never gets old. This is another perfect little done-in-one, with little in the way of plot, but spewing over with violence, obscenity and gallows humour.

Essentially a very twisted take on Hal Ashby’s 1973 classic The Last Detail, One For The Road sees The Goon and his pocket-rocket sidekick Franky take a young sailor under their wing as they try and reunite him with his buddy before curfew, all while getting as fucked-up as humanly possible in every bar in town.

Eric Powell’s one-man show is always a real joy and this is no different. The old-timey setting perfectly suits his classic Pulp-style art, with lush painted colours adding a warm nostalgia to even the most twisted scenarios.

As gorgeous as his art is, it’s Powell’s scripts that really make the Goon work, with every page having at least one laugh-out-loud moment. Other stories on this series have been a touch more serious, but One For The Road is purely going for the gags and it gets them spot-on.

Rating: 4/5.
