Review – The Infinite Loop: Nothing but the Truth #1 (IDW Publishing)

The original Infinite Loop series was great. The artwork fully expressed the emotion felt by the characters as Pierrick Colinet and Elsa Charretier combined to produce a well-paced, wonderful story.

Long story short, it was a modern masterpiece.

But now the time has come for the difficult second album.

The artwork by Daniele Di Niculo is perfect. The action slides effortlessly from panel to panel showing Teddy’s emotion throughout. Her art style is super sharp and really pleasing to the eye. In fact, I honestly haven’t seen such an expressive style in a long time.

That said, while it’s undoubtedly great to look at, the story here leaves much to be desired. It felt like the pacing was all over the place here, with so much exposition that returning would likely be put off and new readers would end up utterly be confused.

The core of the story has some real potential, but is unfortunately lost in the overall busyness of the issue. I also can’t help but think that, narratively speaking, the revelation here should have been kept for later. Not only would this have built the tension more, it would have allowed for some much-needed breathing space in this opening chapter.

Right from the start, this first issue feels like it’s simply racing to the end and that it doesn’t want you to have a chance to stop and look at the world it is trying to create. Much like the previous series, “Nothing But The Truth” has some real potential, but it also feels like it has stumbled out of the blocks here.
