CHEW: The Roleplaying Game – worth getting your teeth into?

For anyone not in the know, Chew is a splendiferous comic book series, created by John Layman and Rob Guillory, about an FDA agent who solves crimes with a food related twist.

Ok, I appreciate I’m not really selling the premise there. What if I also said that it’s set in a world, quite like our own, but where bird meats are illegal after a horrific bird-flu outbreak leads to the death of millions? What if I also said the protagonist, one Tony Chu, is termed a cibopath – someone who gets psychic impressions from whatever they eat?

If you are looking for a rack of crime drama, a pinch of black humour, a dash of cannibalism, and a sprinkling of strangeness, then this could well be the dish for you. Ok ok, enough with the food puns…

Why am I banging this drum then? Well, the folks over at Imagining Games are planning on dropping a Kickstarter for a new roleplaying game based on the award-winning series.

Thankfully you don’t need to eat anything to get a read on the date, its going to be the 5th October at 9.am EDT.

Based on the Forged in the Dark mechanics, you’ll be able to take the reigns of a Special Crimes Division agent investigating some seriously weird and wonderful food crimes. “Can you balance the demands of your job and the needs of your family against the fate of the world?”

I’m eagerly awaiting the drop of the quickstart rules to see what ideas the team here are going to try and deliver while tackling some fairly odd source material. No doubt you can expect our thoughts when we get a chance to try it out. Blades in the Dark was a great read and has some very interesting core mechanics which I think will be a good fit for the Chew setting, so fingers crossed for a lip-smacking release. Ok, no more food related descriptions I promise…

In the meantime, be sure to head on over to the ImagingGames website and sign up for their newsletter to keep up to date with any developments on the project in advance of the October Kickstarter.
